Summary: | This article aims to understand the origin, where they lived and the religious teachings of the Essenes, from a historical, social and religious analysis of ancient sources that were written by historians from the first century of the common era; the novelties present in the Dead Sea Scrolls; interpretations contained in texts published over the centuries, especially by contemporary researchers Gabriele Boccaccini and García Martínez. The texts of Flavius Josephus, Philo of Alexandria and Pliny will be analyzed about what they said about the Essenes, what were the main hypotheses about their origin, the place where archaeological remains were found, the main communities, their rules of coexistence, the way they dealt with material goods and their conception of marriage and celibacy |
