Summary: | Little, or very little, has been written about the vacant seats of the ecclesiastical chapter of Manila. The brief rule of the bishop of Cebu, Fray Pedro de Arce (1560-1645), in the third vacancy of the archbishopric of Manila (1630-34), made two things clear: first, the Augustinian friar was not willing to leave the mitre of Manila in the hands of the cathedral chapter, and second, that the Spanish monarchs, through their bishops, did not want to leave the ecclesiastical government at the mercy of the local powers. This article reveals that ecclesiastical tensions and conflicts in the archbishopric of Manila during the first third of the 17th century were not the exception but the rule, largely because negotiation and patronage became an essential mechanism for the granting of benefices and prebends, as well as for the balance of power in the vacant seats of the ecclesiastical chapters of the Philippines. |
