Summary: | The present study evaluated a group of 292 celibate, same-sex attracted Christians in order to better understand their sexual development, identity, and sense of support. This study identified a developmental pattern in 89.4% of participants, who first became aware of same-sex attractions just prior to puberty and then had involvement in same-sex sexual activity or remained celibate from same-sex sexual activity. This study compared these developmental patterns amongst three distinct sexual identity groups: publicly gay, privately gay, and dis-identifying as gay (non-affiliation with a gay identity). A significant relationship was found between same-sex sexual involvement and choice to publicly identify as gay. Those who remained privately gay had significantly lower levels of family support around same-sex attraction than those who publicly identified as gay and those who did not adopt a gay identity. All groups had low satisfaction levels with church support around same-sex attractions. |
