Description
Summary:That the Bible (especially the Old Testament) – even without being read – is perceived by many of our contemporaries as violent literature is an undeniable fact. But to what extent is this perception justified? Do modern means of investigation, especially computer technology, allow us to objectify the presence of this violence? What types of brutality are deployed in the scriptural corpus and with what vocabulary? Based on a recent contribution by David J.A. Clines («The Ubiquitous Language of Violence in the Hebrew Bible», 2020), this article aims to show the usefulness, but also the inadequacy, of these quantitative approaches to confront the question of violence in the Bible.
