| Summary: | This article studies Ignatius of Loyola's path to canonization: it begins with his fame of sanctity at his death, especially in the veneration of his corpse and tomb; this is followed by consideration of the context in which the slow process of the cause for canonisation took place, concluding with an overview of the 1622 rite of canonization in St Peter's Basilica in Rome, celebrated concurrently for Isidore the Labourer, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila and Filippo Neri. The article outlines how, despite Ignatius' fame as a saint, the Society of Jesus did not make a formal request to start the canonization process until thirty-eight years after his death, and the cause only officially commenced another eleven years later: a total of fifty-three years elapsed from his death to beatification and sixty-six years until his canonization. As the article shows, internal and external factors contributed to this delay: the Society had to overcome an internal crisis after the generalship of Francis Borgia (1565-1572), while in the context of the wider Church, Ignatius' path to canonization took place at a time when the regulations for canonization were undergoing reform, beginning with the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and concluding with the pontificate of Urban VIII (1623-1644) - after Ignatius was canonized.
