Summary:This article considers the complex of factors involved in making the decision to employ, withhold, or withdraw the life sustaining treatment of gastric tube feeding. While gastric tube feeding is necessary to extend life, consideration of the hoped-for quality of life must be balanced with the expected quantity of life. The factor of faith, so central to defining quality of life, provides the courage to risk the decision to balance quantity and quality of life by using a life sustaining treatment.
