Yet, St. Teresa of Jesus refers to suffering, trials, and pain (using derivatives of sufrir, padecer, dolor, and trabajos) over one hundred times in her chapters on the sixth and seventh dwelling places of The Interior Castle. This suffering has various origins: past sins, longing for God, bodily torments, persecution, temptation, illness, and compassion for straying souls. St. Teresa describes the great intensity of this suffering that permeates all levels of the human experience: external and internal, body and soul. However, this suffering and pain is paradoxically accompanied by a deep sense of peace in the center of the soul - a peace that comes from being intimately united to the suffering of Christ. This article will examine the peculiar presence of suffering in the seventh morada of The Interior Castle and what it reveals about St. Teresa’s understanding of the central role that suffering plays in the spiritual life in light of the sufferings of Jesus.
