Description
Summary:Deep divisions in theological perspective have been a persistent theme in American Catholicism. One lesser known, yet significant example of this reality played out in mid-twentieth century Boston. Father Leonard Feeney, a prominent Jesuit who had gained notoriety as a writer and speaker, became embroiled in a controversy which was both theological and disciplinary, leading to his eventual censure, dismissal from the Society of Jesus, and excommunication. The details of Father Feeney's theological stance and discipline by both local and Roman officials have been well documented, but unbeknownst to many before he died in 1978, he was fully reconciled with the church. This latter story, which has only been described in passing or in brief detail in published sources, requires a much fuller description and analysis.
