But a connection that has not yet been identified is with the Anaphora of Mar Theodore, one of the three main East Syrian anaphoras. In this article, I identify four key connections between the Anaphora of Mar Theodore and the Roman Canon: (1) two verbs of offering in two discrete locations; (2) their peculiar emphasis on sacrifice and the importance of divine acceptance; (3) the use of "mystery" in the institution narrative; and (4) a shared sequence of prayers, language, and phrasing in the Te igitur, Memento domine, and Communicantes of the RC. Considered together, these connections indicate the high probability of common source material shared by the Roman Canon, the Anaphora of Theodore, and Anaphora of St. Mark. The article concludes with a Greek hypothetical reconstruction of what such a source might contain. | ||
