However, it also recognizes the potential danger of a purely colonial approach and draws on the Indigenous concept of Makarrata to inform and augment the Christian notion of reconciliation so that it is more relevant to the Australian context. Second, the article briefly considers potential constitutional change which is compatible with Australia’s legal system and could reflect and build upon a new relationship. The article argues that, as Makarrata exhorts, reconciliation is not merely symbolic but must be facilitated by active and tangible change which brings all Australians, Indigenous or otherwise, together – and that this is also a fundamentally Christian imperative.
