Part I proposes a theoretical yet experimental outline for identifying and describing Johannine irony from a speech act perspective. Part II will examine Johannine irony in the text of John 9 as an example by utilising this outline for the purpose of achieving a better understanding and explanation of a powerful literary device of irony.
