520 |a In Romans 8:12-17 three identity designations - ἀδελφοί, ὀφειλέται, and υἱοί - each makes a pertinent contribution to their implicitly paraenetic setting. Firstly, ἀδελφός functions as a subtle reminder to Paul's addressees that they should transfer the social values and behaviour typical of siblingship to the relationships among themselves. Secondly, ὀφειλέται ἐςμὲν οὐ τῇ ςαρκὶ τοῦ κατὰ ςάρκα ζῆν is frequently mistranslated. Paul is not only saying that his addressees are not obligated to live lives dominated by fleshly concerns, but also that they are (metaphorically) "debtors" (ὀφειλέται) with respect to God. Thirdly, however, this positive obligation is qualified with the metaphor that his addressees are also "sons of God" (υἱοὶ θεοῦ). The "debtor" metaphor emphasises that favours bestowed by God (as in 8:1-11) obligate Paul's addressees to an appropriate moral response, while the "son" metaphor qualifies the nature of the response in terms of father-son relational expectations.
