520 |a The early Christians interpreted the cross / resurrection-events in different theological ways. The author of John argues that Jesus showed his power over life and death by laying down his life and taking it up again. These cross / resurrection-events link Jesus in a unique way to his Father, the living God, who has power over life and death. By illustrating his access to that power over life and death, Jesus convinced his disciples of his divine identity. This conviction is expressed in the climactic confession of Thomas in 20:28: 'My Lord and my God'.
