| Riepilogo: | The purpose of this article is to reconstruct Paul's rhetorical strategy in Phil 3:1-11 from the text itself. It is argued that the dominant rhetorical strategy in this section could be described as "reassuring the Philippians of the essence of true righteousness". The section is divided into two phases, namely 3:1-3 (repeating his warning against the opponents) and 3:4-11 (using an argument from own experience to reiterate the contrast between two kinds of righteousness). The second phase could be regarded as the motivation for the first one. By using an argument from his own experience in 3:4-11, Paul is trying to reassure the Philippians as to the meaning of true righteousness. Being reassured, they will not be intimidated by the Judaizers, but will persevere in living the gospel and not lose sight of their certain future in Christ. In analyzing the rhetorical strategies and techniques in 3:1-11 the focus is on the way Paul argues, on the type of arguments he uses and on the rhetorical techniques that could enhance the impact of his communication. All these strategies and techniques serve to reassure the Philippians of the essence of true righteousness, in response to a situation where they were experiencing great adversity and were tempted to abandon their struggle. |
