520 |a Primary readings of a text are those readings that correspond to what the syntactic (including micro- and macrostructures) and semantic features (extending to all possible semiotic signs) of a text allow for within a particular setting (inter- and extratextual). In the event of multiple primary readings some may be possible but not highly probable. Secondary readings involve a semantic reinterpretation of the vocabulary, discourse structure and pragmatics of a text to cause the text to serve as a proof for preconceived ideas and such readings can be labelled as unwarranted, illegitimate readings.
