The decisive importance of grace in the various Pauline references to this encounter is demonstrated. Grace forms the missing theological link which explains why Paul, who sinned so gravely against God, was nevertheless chosen to be the apostle to the gentiles. Grace is not only to the essence of Paul's Damascus experience, but also opens up the whole of his soteriology and a major part of his christology. In developing a theology of Paul, grace should therefore be taken much more seriously than in the past.
