520 |a Referring to Jesus' resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15:20 Paul describes him as "the firstfruit of them that sleep" (άπαρχή τών κεκοιμημένων), apparently because he is concerned not only with the chronological priority of Jesus' resurrection but also with its causal connection to the resurrection of believers "who have fallen asleep". The examination of Old Testament and Jewish texts makes it probable that the reference to "firstfruit" must be viewed as a reference to the offering of the firstfruits of the barley harvest on 16th of Nisan. The fact that the apostle Paul makes the concluding remark (cf. the introducing νυνί δέ "but now" in 1 Cor 15:20) without further explanation strongly suggests that the significance of his assertion was at least indirectly referred to in the preceding text, especially to the "third day" of Jesus' resurrection in 1 Cor 15:4b.
