| Summary: | The aim of this paper is to investigate the wisdom character of the Similitudes of Enoch. It descriptionbes the way in which prophetic forms and thoughts were incorporated in a wisdom-apocalyptic context. The Similitudes of Enoch presents itself as a teaching on wisdom. It reveals the heavenly secrets concerning the world and its future. The cosmological parts of the Similitudes of Enoch function as instruction on the basis of the faith of the righteous ones. But the author also attempts to instruct his first readers on the relevance of traditional beliefs to new scientific knowledge prevalent in his own time. This provides important clues on the social setting of this work. The author considers the Torah to be insufficient to provide answers on the problems of his times. It is rather revealed knowledge concerning the true nature of the cosmos and its Creator which provides the necessary feeling of security in a time of incisive social and cultural shifts. This revelation naturally implies a strong belief in the eschaton and transcendence of death. although it is not exclusively the case. The author also polemizes with competing forms of knowledge among his contemporaries. Because his message complements the Torah. The author must authorize it extensively. |
