Probably comprising in the beginning at least two parts or books, and including a systematic and innovative confessional interrogatory, this work was apparently subject to many textual vicissitudes and adaptations from an early stage in its diffusion, and over thirty manuscript copies survive which preserve various parts of one or more texts. Ascribed in some witnesses to "Magister Robertus Grosseteste", this collection may have been compiled between 1214 and 1225, during an obscure period of his career. Indebted both to Burchard of Worms and the old penitentials and to the confessional techniques of Robert of Flamborough and contemporary thought concerning the seven vices, it is a valuable witness both to Grosseteste's interests and activities and to the penitential and pastoral milieu at the beginning of the thirteenth century. | ||
