Summary: | Often attributed to a certain Hermannus, the work titled in manuscripts the Sententie Petri Abaelardi (also known as the Epitome Theologiae Christiane) report the teaching of Abelard himself, and not that of a disciple, on faith, the sacraments and charity. They have recently been re-edited by S. Buzzetti as Sententie magistri Petri Abelardi (Sententie Hermanni), Florence, La Nuova Italia, 1983, but many aspects of the work are not touched on in that edition. The article analyses the significance of the different versions of the sententie found in the extant manuscripts and of their relationship to the Theologia 'Scholarium'. The changes made to the Sententie echo those made to the Theologia and thus should be considered as modifications made by Abelard himself in the course of his teaching. The Theologia 'Scholarium' provides a more advanced study of the first part of his course, to be grasped only after the Sententie had been fully understood. Abelard's denial that he wrote the liber sententiarum quoted against him by his critics does not mean that he never taught the doctrines it contained. Rather, it is more likely that this work, like the Sententie edited by Buzzetti, was taken down by an amanuensis from lectures, perhaps themselves based on written notes. The extant fragments of the liber sententiarum magistri Petri are edited in an appendix. |
