A remarkably similar theology of the Eucharist exists in a set of mostly anonymous commentaries on Psalms and on I Corinthians dating roughly from the late eleventh to mid twelfth centuries. This theology, based on the commentary of Ambrosiaster, is also contained both in the commentary on the Song...

520 |a A remarkably similar theology of the Eucharist exists in a set of mostly anonymous commentaries on Psalms and on I Corinthians dating roughly from the late eleventh to mid twelfth centuries. This theology, based on the commentary of Ambrosiaster, is also contained both in the commentary on the Song of Song written by John of Mantua c. 1081-1083, and was included in the Sententiae magistri A. used by the school of Anselm at Laon. The teaching found in these several works is, however, unlike that found in the Glossa ordinaria or that found in the writings of the students of Anselm. Instead, it appears to be a sophisticated form of Paschasian theology growing out of the Berengarian controversy. Despite problems of attribution and mutual influence, these works represent an important witness to the development of eucharistic theology in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries.
