Summary: | The temple destruction logion, presented as a charge against Jesus during his trial according to the synoptic Gospels, is attributed to Jesus in the Johannine narrative and given a metaphorical interpretation to clarify its meaning. However, this apparent clarification has actually created a problem that biblical scholars are still struggling to solve. I propose that the metaphor’s referent is Jesus's community of disciples, constituted into a temple community with him as God indwelling it; and that the continuous survival of that community beyond his crucifixion and death was the sign that Jesus promised οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι in John 2:19. |
