Summary: | Was self-awareness unknown during the Early middle ages ? Exegetical commentaries, anti-adoptionist treatises, litterature produced toward refuting the adoration of icons instituted by the second Council of Nicaea, treatises on the vices and the virtues, permit a better understanding of the dialectical relation between natura and persona or between common and individual, as well as detection of a few models of self-perception. The Carolingian « self-concern » formulates a strategy : how, in avoiding the corruption of the self by the vices, one arrives at the perfection of the persona at the eschaton. |
