Duquoc conceives of the Spirit as the incompleteness of revelation, rather than as its seal. The Spirit enables us to avoid succumbing to the totalitarian temptation of positing a premature unity : in fact, ultimate meaning eludes us; in that context, the relation between the individual and the collective is conceived essentially in terms of resistance. In the end, the Spirit designates that which is universal in Christian experience via three criteria given in Scripture for discerning what is of the Spirit : reasonable doctrine, respect for the other and the creative fidelity of the witness. But for all that it is rich and liberating, is there not another side to this theology of the interim : how can one grant the fragmentary character of the truth without evacuating it of coherence? | ||

Duquoc pense l’Esprit comme inachèvement de la révélation plutôt que comme sceau de celle-ci. L’Esprit permet d’échapper au risque totalitaire d’une unité trop précocement posée : en effet, le sens ultime nous échappe; dans ce cadre, le lien de l’individu au collectif est essentiellement pensé en termes de résistance. Enfin, l’Esprit désigne l’universel de l’expérience chrétienne à travers trois critères que donne l’Écriture pour discerner ce qui vient de l’Esprit : une doctrine raisonnable, le respect d’autrui et la fidélité créatrice des témoins. Cette théologie si libératrice et si féconde de l’écart n’a-t-elle pas son revers : comment assumer le caractère fragmentaire de la vérité sans évacuer la cohérence? | ||
