From Saint Basil to the end of the Middle Ages and even to Saint Francis de Sales, friendship is regarded as a form of charity, at times even its perfection, provided that it be lived in Christ. With respect to the discernment of the affections experienced in the heart of communities, the constant references are to justice and the primacy accorded to Christ. Exclusive and possessive relations are on this score ruled out, while the possibility of other forms of friendship is left open. From the time of the diffusion of The Imitation of Christ, with piety becoming more individualistic and resting upon a radical opposition between nature and grace, friendship will be combated fiercely, considered as a plague for communal life and a hindrance to exclusive consecration to God. Study of the principal stages of this long history shows how the given counsels and directives concerning friendship are tied to radically different anthropological foundations. | ||

De saint Basile à la fin du Moyen Âge, et même à saint François de Sales, l’amitié est regardée comme une forme de la charité, parfois même sa perfection, à la condition qu’elle soit vécue en Christ. Les références constantes du discernement sur les affections vécues au sein des communautés sont la justice et la question du primat accordé au Christ. Les relations exclusives et possessives sont de ce fait écartées, sans pour autant que d’autres formes d’amitiés ne soient possibles. À partir de la diffusion de l’Imitation de Jésus Christ, la piété devenant plus individuelle, et reposant sur une opposition radicale entre nature et grâce, l’amitié sera vivement combattue, considérée comme une peste pour la vie commune et comme un frein à une consécration exclusive à Dieu. L’étude des principales étapes de cette longue histoire montre comment les conseils et directives donnés sur l’amitié sont liés à des fondements anthropologiques radicalement différents. | ||
