| 520 | |a The study of what constitutes marriage’s first perfection, that is to say its essence or formal constituent, that is the indissoluble union of the spouses’ minds and hearts, sheds new light on the ends of marriage. This indissoluble union, as the proper and proximate end of marriage, constitutes its object that formally specifies its act. The bearing and rearing of children, which are not integral to the essence of marriage, are its remote end and belong to marriage’s second perfection, which is the spouses’ action. This Thomistic doctrine on the ends of marriage appears at different periods in theological history and is adopted by the Catechism of the Council of Trent. With the 1917 Code of Canon Law, it disappears entirely from Catholic teaching. Reappearing in 1930 in the Encyclical Casti Connubii, it fully recovers its place in Magisterial teaching at Vatican II. St. Thomas' teaching on the sacraments and on marriage in particular permits interpreting the current Magisterium’s position regarding access to communion for the divorced and remarried as intended for those benefitting from a derogation from the requirement for separation. It also allows for the recognition of the necessity for a public manifestation of their reconciliation with God and with the Church. | ||

La génération et l’éducation des enfants, qui n’est pas une partie intégrante de l’essence du mariage, est sa fin éloignée et appartient à la perfection seconde du mariage, à savoir l’agir des époux. Cette doctrine thomiste des fins du mariage apparaît à différentes époques de l’histoire de la théologie et est adoptée par le Catéchisme du Concile de Trente. Avec le Code de droit canonique de 1917, elle disparaît totalement de l’enseignement catholique. Réapparue en 1930 dans l’encyclique Casti connubii, elle ne retrouve toute sa place dans l’enseignement du Magistère qu’à partir de Vatican II. La doctrine thomiste des sacrements, et du mariage en particulier, permet d’interpréter la position du Magistère actuel sur l’accès à la communion de divorcés remariés, en régime de dérogation à la séparation, et de conclure à la nécessité de manifester publiquement leur réconciliation avec Dieu et avec l’Église. | ||
