520 | |a The present paper aims to study the description (hupographê) in the logical and metaphysical thought of the Greek Neoplatonists, in particular that of Porphyry of Tyre (c. 234-310 AD). Conceived as a remedy to the flawed treatment Aristotle had devoted to individuals, the doctrine of the hupographê took up a technical term used in the field of painting to designate a preliminary sketch. This doctrine was adopted by Stoicism and the Platonic-Stoic psychology professed by Antiochus of Ascalon where it was associated with a theory of innate ideas. By providing the equivalent, or at least the analogue of a definition for individuals in the form of the hupographê or description, this theory, which was also connected to the notion of the individual as a bundle of qualities, restored the individual to the domain of quasi-intelligibility - and hence of science - from which the Aristotelian doctrine had excluded him.
