All the same, there is a general recognition of the roles played by each of them in the formation of two distinct, and to a certain point concurrent, theological traditions—that of the Latin west for Augustine, and that of the Byzantine east for Gregory. Does this then not provide scope for thinking that Gregory and Augustine, both in search of the « true philosophy », elaborated in two different ways a subject matter originally common to both of them - the « Platonism » of the first NeoPlatonism? Beyond their reading of Plotinus, it is possibly in their interpretation of Porphyry that lies the theological key to the « distancing » to come between the Latin west and the Byzantine East. | ||

Dès lors, n’y a-t-il pas lieu de penser que Grégoire et Augustin, tous deux à la recherche de la « vraie philosophie », ont élaboré différemment l’un de l’autre cette matière qui leur était originellement commune - le « platonisme » du premier néoplatonisme? Par delà leur lecture de Plotin, c’est dans leur interprétation de Porphyre que se trouve peut-être la clé théologique du « distancement » à venir entre l’Occident latin et l’Orient byzantin. | ||
