Parmi les questions concernant le livre II (commenté au cours de l'année scolaire 1270-71), la question « Utrum intellectus sit unus numero in omnibus » revêt une importance considérable, car elle constitue la première rédaction du traité de Gilles De plurificatione intellectus possibilis. On dispose donc d'un nouveau témoin de la controverse sur l'unité de l'intellect. Tout d'abord, cette question constitue la première réaction de la Faculté de théologie de Paris au De unitate intellectus de Thomas d'Aquin. Deuxièmement, elle fournit un terminus ante quern pour les Quaestiones de anima éditées par M. Giele, qui sont par conséquent antérieures à la fin de 1270. Troisièmement, elle montre qu'il est désormais impossible d'accepter la thèse de M. Chossat, selon laquelle le De plurificatione intellectus de Gilles ferait allusion au De anima intellectiva de Siger de Brabant. The Ms. Munich, Staatsbibliothek, Clm. 8005 contains a heretofore unknown transcription of Giles of Rome's reading of the 4 books of the Sentences datable to the years 1270-72. Among the questions concerning Book II (commented during the school year 1270-71) the question « Utrum intellectus sit unus numero in omnibus » stands out considerably, for it constitutes Giles' first draft of his treatise De plurificatione intellectus possibilis. We have thus a new witness for the controversy on the unity of the intellect. First of all this question constitutes the Paris Theology School's first response to Thomas Aquinas's De unitate intellectus. Secondly, it furnishes a terminus ante quern for Giele's edition of the Quaestiones de anima which, consequently, are (anterior) to the end of 1270. Thirdly, it shows that one can no longer accept Chossat's thesis according to which Giles's De plurificatione intellectus hints at Siger of Brabant's De anima intellectiva. | ||
