La nature de la cause première, qui est caractérisée par la capacité de produire une infinité de choses, implique qu'elle connaisse actuellement non seulement les choses que la cause première produit, mais aussi les choses qu'elle peut produire. La puissance causale de l'être infini excède non seulement tout étant qui s'est réalisé ou pourra se réaliser dans un moment quelconque du temps, mais aussi toute possibilité qui n'implique pas d'incompossiblilté logique. La puissance de Dieu est ainsi véritablement absolue, et sa transcendance est soustraite à tout conditionnement provenant de la physique. The more pertinent aspects of Duns Scotus's critique of Aristotle's rational theology refer back to the idea of « possibility » which plays a central part in the idea of infinity - a being that is infinite in perfection and potentiality surpasses any being that is finite in act or simply possible - and to any measure one might be using or possibly ever use. The first cause's nature, characterized by its capacity to produce an infinity of things, implies that it knows in act not only those things that the first cause produces, but abo those things it has the possibility to produce. The causal power of the infinite being surpasses not only every being that has been or that could ever be at any given moment in time, but also every possibility that implies no logical non-copossibility. Thus the power of God is absolutely and truly first, and its transcendance subject to no conditioning whatsoever from the world of physics. | ||
