Dans son analyse de la structure du monde sensible, Porphyre reprend les doctrines péripatéticiennes sur l'essence et la forme, qu'avait codifiées Alexandre d'Aphrodise. L'attitude concordiste et philo-péripatéticienne rattache Porphyre à la tradition platonicienne antérieure à Plotin. Plotin, en effet, développe dans les traités Sur les genres de l'être (VI 1-3) une critique radicale de la notion péripatéticienne d'essence sensible, et il accuse la séparation entre l'image sensible non-substantielle et son fondement intelligible jusqu'à rendre problématique la structure même de la métaphysique gradualiste (néo-)platonicienne. L'analyse des sources confirme l'existence de ce dissentiment philosophique entre Plotin et les néo-platoniciens postérieurs. Porphyry's Commentaries on Aristotle and on the Sentences (Sentence 42 in particular) display a concordialist attitude that tries to integrate the Peripatetic theories on the sentient essence, universals and predication, into (neo-)Platonic doctrinal thinking. In analyzing the structure of the sentient world, Porphyry takes up Peripatetic doctrines on essence and form that Alexander of Aphrodisias had codified. This concordist and philo-Peripatetic attitude links Porphyry to ante-Plotinus Platonic tradition. Plotinus does indeed develop a profound criticism of the Peripatetic notion of sentient essence in his On the Kinds of Being (VI 1-3), and sharpens the line that separates the non-substantive perceptible image from its intelligible foundation, going so far as to render the very structure of (neo-)Platonic gradualist metaphysics problematic. An analysis of sources confirms the existence of this philosophical discord between Plotinus and later neo-Platonists. | ||
