La certitude ne peut se fonder que sur le fait que Dieu est parfait, qu'il ne peut donc être trompeur et qu'il le serait si les évidences pouvaient être fausses. Reste à savoir si cet argument n'est pas contradictoire en lui-même (problème du cercle cartésien). De plus, Descartes admet lui-même que Dieu peut être trompeur. Reste à savoir aussi comment distinguer les évidences authentiques de ce que nous croyons être des évidences qui ne le sont pas. Descartes' fundamental problem is the search for certainty. In the Regulae, it is mathematics which is the model of a science which is certain. This is no longer so in the Méditations and in the Principes. Certainty can only be founded on the fact that God is perfect, that He cannot mislead and that He would do so if evidences could be false. It remains to be seen whether this argument is not in itself contradictory (the problem of the Cartesian circle). Moreover, Descartes himself admits that God can mislead. It also remains to be ascertained how one can distinguish authentic evidences from what we believe to be evidences and really are not. | ||
