Fasciné par la capacité d'adaptation du vivant, il ne l'a pas comprise à la manière de Pangloss, jugée optimiste ou ulililarisle; l'adaptation biologique, celle de l'homme en particulier, ne peut être que créatrice et responsable. C'est pourquoi, aimera-t-il à le répéter, il faut courtiser la Terre... car l'humanité n'en a qu'une! Si son analyse porte de préférence sur l'écologie, l'économie, l'énergie, l'esthétique et l'éthique (les cinq « E » ), elle peut informer la réflexion théologique, dans la ligne ouverte par Teilhard de Chardin, avec, peut-être, plus de réalisme. From the beginning of his research work in microbiology to his later preoccupation with the environment, René Dubos, who died in 1982, was finally animated by a single passion, that of understanding the place of man in the world. He was fascinated by the capacity of a living being to adapt itself, but he did not understand this in the same way as Pangloss, who was considered to be optimistic and utilitarian; biological adaptation, especially that of man, can but be creative and responsible. This is why, as he often liked to repeat, it is necessary to court the earth... because humanity only has one! Although his analysis relates mainly to ecology, economics, energy, esthetics and ethics (the five Es), it also provides food for theological reflection, along the lines suggested by Teilhard de Chardin, and, perhaps, with more realism. | ||
