Did Jesus have the fullness of the Spirit from the very beginning of his life? Is not his baptism a messianic investiture that rules out its pre-existence? This was the subtle objection presented by Trypho, the Jewish rabbi. Justin's answer (Dialogue, chap. 87-88) is interesting for two reasons: on the one hand, he gives the first theological explanation of Jesus' baptism; on the other hand, he presents a non-canonical tradition of the episode. | ||
