The Thomasian doctrine of the transubstantiation is faced up to by the averroist philosophers at the University of Paris, firstly by the affirmation that God has miraculously brought into existence the eucharistie accidents without a subject, secondly by a new definition of the notion of accident, and thirdly by the attribution of the role of the subject to the quantity. The doctrine is contested by Boethius of Dacia, by the "anonymous of Zimmermann" and by Siger of Brabant. The Dominican theologian Dietrich of Freiberg later adopts the thesis of Siger. |
