AB La cohérence diachronique et systématique de l'œuvre de Gassendi réside dans son effort pour justifier, par son scepticisme chrétien, l'impuissance de la raison à penser ce qui est dans sa quiddité. Cela permet de poser le principe de séparation des vérités révélées absolues et des vérités de raison relatives, et de fonder à la fois la fidélité aux mystères et aux institutions de la religion vraie (ici, la religion catholique romaine), et l'autonomie de la raison humaine dans la recherche de la vérité concernant les choses de la nature telle qu'elles se manifestent à elle. The diachronic and systematic coherence in the works of Gassendi is maintained by his attempts to justify, through his Christian scepticism, the inability of reason to think anything within its quiddity. This allows him to advance the principle of a separation between revealed absolute truths and reasoned relative truths, and to embrace a devotion to the mysteries and institutions of true religion (in this case, Roman Catholicism) at the same time as a belief in the autonomy of human reasoning in the quest for truth concerning natural things as they appear.
