Thomas d'Aquin (S. th., II-II, q. 180), qu'il a préparée à l'Angelicum (Rome) sous la direction de Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, o.p., dans les années 1920. Conçue dans le climat du débat autour du Des grâces d'oraison (1901) d'A. Poulain, s.j. sur l'essence de la contemplation, cette thèse dont le P. Chenu lui-même et les historiens parlent souvent, constitue une étude d'envergure et un document fondateur de la méthode et de la pensée de l'auteur. Dans l'élan du renouveau de la théologie de la grâce (M.-J. Scheeben, P. Rousselol, etc.), le P. Chenu exploite à fond la théologie des dons du Saint-Esprit d'A. Gardeil et R. Garrigou-Lagrange en tant que constitutive de l'« intellectualisme religieux » de S. Thomas dont la source prioritaire est identifiée dans la doctrine de la contemplation — pati divina — de Denys l'Arèopagile. With the help of an historico-doctrinal introduction, this article sets out a selection of significant extracts from the De Contemplatione of M.-D. Chenu, O.P., which was his doctoral thesis, unpublished and in Latin, on St. Thomas Aquinas's doctrine of contemplation (S. th. II-II, q. 180). He wrote the thesis at the Angelicum (Rome) under the supervision of Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P., in the nineteen-twenties and in the atmosphere of the debate about "Des grâces d'oraison" (The Graces of Interior Prayer) (1901) by A. Poulain, S.J., and about the essence of contemplation. The thesis, often mentioned by historians and by Father Chenu himself, is a far-reaching study and a key document on the methods and ideas of its author. Under the impetus of the revival of the theological doctrine of grace (M.-J. Scheeben, P. Rousselol, etc.), Father Chenu explores in depth the theology of A. Gardeil and R. Garrigou-Lagrange on gifts imparted by the Holy Spirit, insofar as that theology is an element in the "religious intellectualism" of St. Thomas (the principal source of which is identified in the doctrine of contemplation — pati divina — of Denys the Areopagite). |
