Chez Albert, pour qui le Liber de causis est une adaptation de la théologie d'Aristote par « David le juif » (ibn Daūd), l'horizon herméneutique est fourni par le péripalétisme arabe (Avicenne et Ghazālī), et, plus spécialement, par une Epistola de principio universitatis (d'Alexandre d'Aphrodise) qu'il attribue au Stagirite. L'univers de Thomas est tout différent : c'est celui d'un philologue qui distingue et compare systématiquement les positions d'Aristote, de Proclus, de l'« auteur du Livre des causes » et de Denys. L'examen des sources principales des deux interprètes et la confrontation de leurs exégèses des proposītīons 3 et 11 du Liber sont l'occasion de préciser leurs conceptions de l'univers « aristotélicien » (théorie des Intelligences séparées et de l'« âme noble », mouvements et animation du ciel). A comparative study of De causis et processu universitatis by Albertus Magnus, and Thomas Aquinas's commentary on the Liber de causis, reveals some profound divergences in their respective views about later ancient philosophy in general, and that of Aristotle in particular. To Albertus, for whom the Liber de causis is an adaptation by David of Dinant of Aristotelian theology, the most far-seeing interpretation is provided by Arabian Aristotelianism (Avicenna and Al-Ghazzali), and more especially by an Epistola de principio universitatis by Alexander of Aphrodisa which Albertus sees as relating to Aristotle. For Thomas the universe is quite different: he is a philologist who systematically compares and contrasts the doctrines of Aristotle, of Proclus, of "The author of the Book of Causes", and of Pseudo-Dionysius. An examination of the principal sources of the two interpreters, and a comparison of their respective explanations of propositions 3 and 11 of the Liber, afford an opportunity to get a clear idea of their conceptions of an "Aristotelian" universe (the theory of separate intelligences, the "noble soul", and the motions and animation of the sky). | ||
