La comparaison avec le traité des passions de Descartes fait apparaître les différences : partant d'une séparation entre l'esprit et le corps, Descartes considère les passions comme les mouvements d'une « machine qui se meut soi-même », fondant ainsi la physiologie des passions, mais en les déshumanisant aussi. Le P. Coeffeteau, au début du XVIIe siècle, fait en quelque façon la transition, en présentant les passions suivant S. Thomas, mais avec une attention nouvelle à la physiologie qu'elles comportent. The study of the passions in St. Thomas's Summa Theologica is one of the most extensive of its kind; its standpoint is theological. It presupposes a personal anthropology which allows a transition from the plane of the senses to the spiritual plane. As an ethic, it is among those in which the question of happiness is paramount. A comparison with Descartes' treatise on the passions reveals some differences: starting with a complete separation of mind and body, Descartes sees the passions as the movements of a "machine which sets itself in motion", and he thereby merges physiology with the passions, but he also dehumanises them. Father Coeffeteau, at the beginning of the 17th century, makes the transition in a sense, presenting the passions in the same way as St. Thomas, but paying new attention to the physiology they involve. | ||
