En remontant aux sources d'une telle attention, l'arlicle analyse soit les principales assomptions théoriques de la physiognomonie traditionnelle (rapport âme-corps, influences astrologiques, comparaison homme-animal), soit le statut épistémologique donné au « jugement » tiré du déchiffrage des signes naturels. The "science" or "art" of physiognomy has not failed to attract certain philosophers, such as F. Bacon and P. Gassendi, engaged during the 16th and 17th centuries upon critical reviews of Aristotelianism and of the occultist tendencies of the Renaissance. Adverting to the sources of the attention given to the subject, the article analyses not only the main theoretical assumptions of traditional physiognomy (interaction of mind and body, astrological influences, and man-animal comparisons), but also the epistemological status accorded to judgments drawn from the deciphering of natural signals. | ||
