Le rôle que la nature a assigné au langage est d'exprimer la liberté native de l'homme et d'en faire une communion des volontés au sein d'une société privée de rapports de domination. Cependant la servitude volontaire, moteur de la tyrannie, se déploie à travers et à la faveur du langage: le statut de celui-ci apparaît dès lors fondamentalement ambivalent. Une lecture plus approfondie permet de montrer que cette ambivalence renvoie à la liberté elle-même, entendue à la fois comme source de révolte contre la tyrannie et comme cause paradoxale de la servitude. Cette affirmation du caractère absolument inconditionné de la liberté fait ainsi éclater les limites d'un naturalisme massivement admis pour annoncer l'idéalisme moderne. This article is an interpretive analysis of the Discourse, and pays particular attention to the problematical relationship between language and liberty on the one hand and tyranny on the other, dealt with in this very original text in the political tradition. The role assigned by nature to language is to allow man to exercise his innate liberty of expression and explore the interplay of wills in a society sheltered from any form of domination. Yet the voluntary submission to slavery and servitude, which keeps tyranny alive, takes place through and with the help of language : language seems at this point to become fundamentally ambivalent. A more penetrating reading of the text allows the conclusion that this ambivalence harks back to liberty itself, seen as both a source of revolt against tyranny and (paradoxically) as a mainstay of servitude. This affirmation of the absolutely unconditional nature of liberty breaks through the boundaries of a widely accepted naturalism to herald modern idealism. | ||
