La création est essentiellement relation, elle met en œuvre la dialectique de la liberté. La prédication d'Ambroise sur l'hexaéméron le lui a fait comprendre, en mettant l'accent sur la conversion et en présentant un exposé de la création, susceptible de réfuter les manichéens. En reprenant ce mode d'exposition, Augustin s'est inscrit dans une tradition, mais il l'a réélaborée pour traduire son expérience spirituelle. The Augustinian interpretation of the Creation finds expression in the maxim "conversio, creatio, formatio", for St. Augustine saw the Creation in the light of his own experience; namely his conversion, which showed him that the acceptance of a creative presence coincided with the fulfilment of his being and with the actualization of the image of God and with deification. The Creation essentially implies a relationship, bringing into play the argument of free choice. The teachings of St. Ambrose about the Hexaëmeron convinced St. Augustine of this, stressing as they do the importance of conversion, and giving an account of the Creation capable of confuting the Manicheans. By reverting to this mode of argument St. Augustine conformed with tradition, but he elaborated it to interpret his own spiritual experience. | ||
