En particulier, à propos des moniales adoratrices, le commentaire d'un passage célèbre sur leur prière amène à s'interroger sur la religion de Hugo, sur sa compréhension du sacrifice et finalement sur le sens du personnage de Jean Valjean. In "Les Misérables" as well as in his poetry, Victor Hugo reveals his sense of the divine in a somewhat precursory fashion — as if on a threshold, waiting for something to happen — but in a way which has considerable theological bearing. Certain parts of the text of the novel are studied from that angle. The aspirations of the principal characters are thereby indirectly illuminated. In particular, the comments on a well known passage about the prayers of the adoring nuns lead to speculations on the nature of Hugo's religion, on his understanding of self-denial, and ultimately on the true personality of the character Jean Valjean. | ||
