On y montre dans le détail comment Gabriel Harvey, un ramiste du XVIe s., à Cambridge, lit ses textes classiques essentiels, avec, et par mode de commentaires de La Ramée et de Talon, et de traités théoriques sur la dialectique. C'est en tant qu'ils s'accordent avec ou diffèrent de la dialectique de La Ramée qu'il assimile Quinlilien ou Cicerón. Ce faisant, il transforme profondément l'humanisme cicéronien, en en faisant un humanisme pragmatique, propre à constituer une préparation au succès pour un fonctionnaire civil des Tudor ou un homme d'affaires. Dans le XVIe s. anglais, le ramisme permet à un érudil méticuleux de transformer une étude des classiques en un entratnement, moralement neutralisé, à la réussite matérielle et à l'acquisition d'une position publique. This paper is part of a larger study of the metamorphosis of the intellectual ideals of fifteenth century Italian humanism into what in England is termed 'the humanities' — a teaching programme in the liberal arts. It is shown in detail how Gabriel Harvey, a sixteenth century Ramist at Cambridge, read his key classical texts alongside, and by way of Ramus and Talon's commentaries and theoretical treatises in dialectic. He absorbed Quintilian and Cicero as they agreed with, or differed from Ramist dialectic. And in so doing he transformed Ciceronian humanism into a pragmatic humanism, suitable as a preparation for success as a Tudor civil servant or homme d'affaires. In sixteenth century England, Ramism allowed the meticulous scholar to transform a study of the classics into a morally neutral training for material success and public position. | ||
