La Note présente le catalogue d'une exposition L'image de piété en France, 1814-1914, organisée à Paris en 1984. L'A. analyse en détail d'abord l'affiche de l'exposition, puis une série de quatre timbres édités par les postes vaticanes à l'occasion de l'Année Sainte de la Réconciliation, 1983-1984. Il montre ainsi comment la spiritualité et la théologie se transmettent, pour une large part, autrement que par des mots; il alerte pasteurs et catéchètes sur la formation chrétienne des enfants par l'image; il souligne l'ouverture d'un nouveau champ d'étude de la psychologie religieuse. En passant, il tente de distinguer entre art « religieux » et art « sacré ». Can a study of the proliferation in France of holy pictures, throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, add anything to our knowledge of the history of religious feeling and outlook? The note sets out the catalogue of an exhibition, Holy pictures in France. 1814-1914, held in Paris in 1984. The A. analyses in great detail, first the exhibition poster, and then a set of four stamps issued by the Vatican postal service to commemorate the Holy Year of Reconciliation, 1983-84. He also shows how spirituality and theology are communicated, in large measure, otherwise than by words; he reminds priests and catechists of the importance of pictures in the Christian upbringing of children; and he stresses that a new field is opening up for the study of religious psychology. In passing he attempts to distinguish between "religious" and "sacred" art. |
