Il a marqué le socialisme en formation, il a contribué théoriquement aux espérances de l'Allemagne et, grâce à ses recherches, la critique s'est transformée. Loin de parcourir une voie royale, la raison, à lire son œuvre, est pressée de questions quant au corps, au sens, à la nature; elle redevient hétéronome par rapport au cosmos sensible, L'essence du Christianisme ne conduit pas au raccourci de l'humanisme prométhéen: s'il transgresse l'image aliénante de Dieu, l'homme découvre sa force de création, mais aussi la dépossession de son identité, l'incomplétude de son essence. La question de Dieu ne se réduit nullement à déconstruire une représentation afin que l'homme hérite de lui-même : son étude tend à montrer le rôle édificateur de cette idée de Dieu pour l'humanité. Ainsi l'intérêt se réveille-t-il à son sujet parmi les théologiens contemporains; son projet traduit des inquiétudes, des hésitations et, parfois sans le vouloir, il ouvre des alternatives praticables qui sont restées inexplorées, mais dont il faut savoir lui rendre justice. Though never having been classified among the said "masters of suspicion", Feuerbach nevertheless teaches that the rationality of Enlightment has severely defied itself at the outset of the 19th century. He has influenced the growth of socialism, he has theoretically reinforced hopes of Germany and thanks to his researches criticism has undergone great changes. Far from following a royal highway, wisdom, throughout his work, is pressed with questions concerning the body, the senses, nature; it becomes again heteronomous compared to sensible cosmos. The Essence of Christianity does not undercut Promethean humanism; when transgressing the alienating image of God, man discovers his own creative power, but also the dispossession of his identity, the incomplete nature of his essence. The God-issue does not merely consist in destroying a representation so that man only inherits from himself: his study tends to show the constructive part of the God-idea for the human species. He thus awakens the modern theologians' interest; in his scheme one senses his anxiety, hesitations and sometimes against his will, he opens feasible alternatives as yet unexplored, but for which one must render him justice. | ||
