En effet, depuis Vatican I, les premiers tiennent que l'infaillibilité du pape est garantie a priori lorsque celui-ci parle ex cathedra; les seconds par contre affirment que l'infaillibilité (du pape comme du concile) n'est attestée que dans la réception de leurs jugements par l'ensemble de l'Église. Le présent article tente de dépasser cette controverse en démontrant, de manière formelle, que l'infaillibilité implique nécessairement la réception; et que, si l'on veut en faire abstraction, on débouche inévitablement sur des apories inextricables. Certaines de ces apories ont déjà été signalées par plusieurs auteurs (Boulgakov, Bruaire, Panikkar, Schillebeeckx...), mais sans qu'ils en tirent toutes les conséquences. L'A. en reprend ici l'examen, de manière synthétique et exhaustive. Il examine en particulier les problèmes posés par la question du sujet de l'infaillibilité, celle de ses conditions d'exercice, et, plus radicalement, celle de son fondement. Il ressort de son argumentation que si le pape peut bien être, en certaines circonstances, le porte-parole de l'infaillibilité de l'Église, il n'en est pas pour autant la source ou le critère. Ainsi pourraient se trouver dégagées les bases d'un accord entre les Églises catholique et orthodoxe sur le délicat problème du dogme de l'infaillibilité pontificale. Up to now the question of infallibility remains a stumbling stone between Catholics and Orthodox. Indeed since Vatican I Council, the former have held that the Pope's infallibility is guaranteed a priori when he speaks ex cathedra, while the latter have asserted that the Pope's or the Council's infallibility is only proved when their judgements are received by the Church as a whole. The present article attempts to overcome this controversy by demonstrating, in a formal manner, that infallibility necessarily implicates its acceptation; and that if one wants to leave it aside, one is inevitably led into inextricable aporias. Some of these have already been mentioned by several authors (Boulgakov, Bruaire, Pannikar, Schillebeeckx...) but without them inferring all the consequences. Here the A. takes up the examination in a synthetical and exhaustive way. He studies in particular the problems raised by the question of the subject of infallibility, that of how it is exercised and more radically that of its' bases. The result of his argumentation is that the Pope under certain circumstances can well be the spokesman of the Church's infallibility, without necessarily being its' source or criterion. Thus could be outlined the bases of an agreement between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches on the delicate problem of Pontifical Infallibility. | ||
