Like every living creature, man has no experience of his dying. But unlike animals' he conceives that his life is a relentless progress towards its term. According to Schopenhauer, this consciousness of the action of dying defines philosophy. The characteristic of the philosophical ad consists in transposing the act of dying one cannot experience in the idea of death. This "conceptual shift" of the act of dying instates the specifically human. In this sense, Schopenhauer's thought wants to express a refutation of Epicure's natural philosophy. But this certainty of death does not open out on any dead-lock of life. For in Schopenhauer's prospect, the philosophical act renders death unreal. The cycle "birth-death" as law of the only aspect of the fact of being an individual is the practice of the universal will-to-live, never its negation. Every living creature, including man, is but a sample of this shove and a moment of its hellish circuit. The act of rendering death unreal realized by Schopenhauer leads in fact to an ontological reduction of man unpretending sample of the universal will-to-live, and not aim and pinnacle of life. | ||
