La première exégèse connue de ce « supplément » est celle d'Hilaire qui, percevant dans l'admonestation de Jésus les accents d'une colère réductible à l'ira des moralistes, en fait la matière d'une pédagogie divine. Ambroise, sensible à la cécité de Paul, y voit l'éveil de la connaissance du Christ par les « yeux de l'âme », ce qui est une perspective d'Origène. Augustin commente le dialogue à plusieurs niveaux : celui de la psychologie humaine, celui de l'antithèse des deux hommes (S. Paul) en un seul, celui enfin de la typologie de la conversion faisant s'affronter deux volontés. Chacune de ces exégèses fait, à des titres divers, de « aiguillon » la charnière de la conduite de Jésus envers Paul et de la réponse de ce dernier. An inquiry into the Latin exegesis of a « supplement » to the Latin text of Acts 9: 4-6, attested in the Clementine Vulgate and widely known in the patristic age : The man Paul «kicking against the goad» (a proverbial formula), frightened, asks Christ what he must do. The first known exegesis of this «supplement» is that of Hilary who, noticing in Jesus' admonition stresses of an anger reducible to the ira of moralists, makes of it a question of divine pedagogy. Ambrose, aware of Paul's blindness, sees in the «supplement» the awakening of the «eyes of the soul» to the knowledge of Christ, which in fact is Origen's view. Augustine comments on the dialogue from several perspectives: That of human psychology ; that of the antithesis of two men (St. Paul) in one; and, finally, that of the typology of conversion in which two wills confront each other. In its own way, each of these exegese makes of the « goad » the focal « point » of Jesus' behavior towards Paul and of the latter's response. | ||
