Aussi a-t-il développé sa morale particuliére davantage que sa morale générale, ce en quoi l'école thomisle lui a été infidéle. Mais cette option rend sa morale trés solidaire des singularités de la culture et de l'époque à laquelle elle est bien adaptée. En outre S. Th. n'attache pas aux propositions morales générales un degré de certitude qui permettrait de les considérer comme intemporellement vraies et adaptables à chaque cas singulier. Enfln, à parlir de plusieurs exemples (la charité comme « forme » des vertus, divers aspects du traité de la tempérance...), l'A. établit que la morale de S. Th. n'est pas complétement systématique et homogéne: c'est une qualité pour une considération authentiquement morale, mais empéche de vouloir l'exploiter ou la transposer comme un tout parfaitement homogéne. Like Aristotle, St. Thomas maintained that discussions of ethics could not be confined to general principles, but ought to be related to the particularity of moral acts. He also developed his discussion of the ethics of particular actions more than his general ethics. In this subsequent thomists have not been faithful. But this option means that his ethics are very closely linked to the particularity of the culture and the epoc for which they were so well adapted. In addition St. Th. does not attach to general ethical propositions that degree of certitude which would allow one to consider them as eternally valid and applicable in every instance. Finally, with reference to several examples (charity as the 'form' of the virtues, various aspects of the treaty on temperance...), the author shows that St. Thomas' ethics are not completely systematic and homogeneous: this is a virtue for an authentic ethical argumentation, but prevents one from wishing to exploit it or to transpose it as a perfectly homogeneous whole. | ||
